Shearwater Aviation Museum
The Shearwater Aviation Museum (SAM) was founded in 1978 to reflect the role that Canadian Maritime Military Aviation has played since 1918 and, in particular, the Maritime Military Aviation activities associated with Shearwater when the first base was established at Shearwater to counter the submarine warfare threat. SAM received its accreditation in 1979. As an official Canadian Forces (CF) Museum, SAM is established as a Non-Public Fund (NPF) entity within the National Defence Act. A 12 Wing Shearwater Board of Trustees governs the Museum. The Museum grew from the hearts and minds of the men and women who laboured to bring the dream to life over the last twenty years. SAM enjoys international recognition for its work. Its collection has grown steadily to now include over 15,000 artefacts and twenty four heritage aircraft. It has developed from a small space in a military quarters building to its current location in three adjacent buildings: one a former WW II recreation centre and the other a former Roman Catholic chapel. Following the completion of the renovation of the former recreation centre (Phase I of the SAM Development Plan), the Museum was opened to the public in its current location in August 1995. A second exhibit hangar was erected in 2001, using funds raised by the Shearwater Aviation Museum Foundation. A foyer addition, improving the museum’s customer service and front of house activities, was also funded by the SAM Foundation and was constructed in 2003-2004, connecting the newly built exhibit hangar and the library annex. Visitation currently is in the range of 23,000-25,000 visitors per year.
